In the sandstone overhangs of the Waterberg, in South Africa's Limpopo Province, there are paintings of eland and kudu and giraffe. Some were made a thousand years ago, some older, by the ancestors of the San who hunted this bushveld long before anyone drew a border across it. The pigments came from the land itself, mineral colours ground from local soil and mixed with plant dyes, brushed onto rock in shelters that kept the weather off them for centuries. Thirteen such sites have been identified inside the Lapalala Wilderness reserve alone.
Follow the Palala River a short way from those cliffs and you reach a cluster of low buildings the colour of dried blood and clay. Their walls are striped in fine horizontal bands, laid down layer by layer, the strata catching the light like a cutaway of the ground beneath your boots. This is the Lapalala Wilderness School, and the resemblance is not decorative. Those banded walls are made of the earth that was dug out to build them.
A School That Dug Itself Out of the Ground
The school has been teaching since the mid 1980s, and more than a hundred thousand young South Africans have passed through its week-long conservation programmes. It runs roughly three thousand students a year, aged ten to eighteen, most of them from communities in the surrounding Waterberg. The old campus was a converted farmhouse that had grown by accretion and worn out, and when the reserve decided to reintroduce predator species, the school moved to a neighbouring property that had previously been worked as farmland. Johannesburg practice Local Studio drew the new campus. It opened in November 2022. Rather than truck in material from a city hundreds of kilometres away, the architects looked at what came out of the excavations. The Waterberg's soil is stained deep red by iron, and once compressed between shuttering it makes a wall of extraordinary density and beauty. So the trenches dug for the foundations became the walls that stand on them. Nothing travelled. Nothing was dumped. The building is quite literally the hole it came out of, a piece of the same instinct that once carved entire churches down into living Ethiopian rock rather than hauling stone across a country.
Rammed earth pays back in more than carbon. The walls are thick and dense, so they hold the day's heat out of the classrooms and release warmth slowly through the cold bushveld nights. They deaden sound, which matters in a dormitory full of teenagers. They need no paint, no cladding, and no finish, since the material is the finish. Local Studio combined them with rock, South African pine, hardwood, and clay brick pavers laid in the same red register, so the campus reads as one continuous gesture from path to roofline.
Off the Grid on Purpose
Going off grid was in the brief from the first sketch, and in South Africa that ambition carries a particular weight. The national electricity supply has been faltering for close to two decades, with scheduled blackouts a routine feature of life. A school built to teach environmental stewardship could hardly plug itself into a struggling coal grid and call the lesson delivered.
So the campus generates and holds its own power through a 108 kilowatt-peak solar array backed by 240 kilowatt hours of battery storage. Water comes from two boreholes on the property and is heated by thermodynamic solar systems. The whole complex has been certified Net Zero Carbon, and the awards followed quickly, including recognition from the South African Institute of Architects in Limpopo and a strong showing at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore.
Thomas Chapman, who founded Local Studio, has argued that projects like this one are exactly the prototypes rural South Africa lacks, and that investment in these areas returns more than the same money spent in a struggling city. The point travels well beyond the Waterberg. Across Africa, the places furthest from reliable infrastructure have the least reason to keep waiting for it and the most to gain from buildings that carry their own.
Where the Classroom Has No Walls
The plan itself refuses the shape most schools take. Instead of a corridor lined with sealed boxes, Local Studio arranged the buildings around open courtyards that look out into the bush, with a timber structure planted with indigenous species throwing shade over the gathering spaces. One of the main teaching venues is an outdoor amphitheatre. Classrooms, library, dining hall, and dormitories sit light and airy in white, pale timber, and earth tones, and the shaded courtyards between them do as much teaching as the rooms.
Consider what a student actually learns walking through it. The wall beside her is the ground she is standing on. The power in the socket came from the sun over her head that afternoon. The water came from beneath her feet. The shade over the courtyard is thrown by plants that belong to this valley. A curriculum about biodiversity is being delivered by the architecture before a teacher opens her mouth, which is the oldest African idea about buildings there is, that a house is never merely a thing but a lesson its occupants live inside.
Land That Was Given Back Its Work
The deepest layer of this project is the ground plan itself. The campus stands on land that had been farmed hard and left degraded, inside a region now recognised as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Building there meant rehabilitating bushveld rather than clearing it, so the construction became part of the land's recovery instead of another withdrawal from it. A 300 square metre off-grid biodiversity centre has since been added to carry that work further.
Set that against the ordinary arithmetic of construction. Most buildings are a debt taken out against a landscape. Ground is stripped, material is quarried somewhere else and burned into shape, energy is imported for the life of the structure, and the surrounding ecology absorbs the cost quietly. Lapalala inverts nearly every term in that equation, and it does so on farmland that was already spent, in a country where the question of who holds land and what has been done to it is never far from the surface.
The Oldest Lesson in the Waterberg
Across this series the same finding keeps surfacing from different corners of the continent. A desert villa that learned from a weaver bird. A library cooled by clay pots. A leadership centre wearing a pattern Rwandan women saved from extinction. Now a school in the Waterberg made from its own foundation trenches. None of these buildings needed to import an idea. Each of them is an argument that African places already contain what African buildings require.
The children who come to Lapalala for a week arrive to learn that they belong to a living system rather than standing outside it. They sleep behind walls of local soil, under power drawn from local sun, in a valley slowly healing from what farming took out of it. Then they go home to townships and villages across the country carrying an idea that no lecture could plant as firmly.
A thousand years ago on this same land, someone ground colour from the soil and painted an eland onto rock. The materials were local, the knowledge was inherited, and the work has outlasted empires. The newest building in the valley was made the same way. In the Waterberg, that is not innovation. It is memory, finally being taken seriously again.
