In a village on the Sahel's edge, pots shaped by local women became a ceiling, one that cooled the building naturally, and the construction site became a school. This is where the future of African building was first drafted.

Step inside the library at Gando around midday and look up. The ceiling above you is pierced with dozens of circular openings, and through them the Burkinabè sun pours down in round beams, scattering patterns of light across the floor. As the day turns, children read beneath a slow-moving map of the sky. 

Now look closer at those openings, because each one is the ghost of a pot. Earthenware vessels, shaped by hand by the women of the village the way their mothers and grandmothers shaped them, were cut open and set into the wet concrete of the ceiling slab. The concrete cured around their curves. What remained was a roof full of perfect circles that light the room by day and, more remarkably, cool it around the clock. No wires run to this system and no parts were shipped from anywhere. This pottery tradition solved the village's cooling problem. 

A Classroom Too Hot to Think In

The story of this ceiling begins with a boy who had to leave home to learn to read. Diébédo Francis Kéré was born in Gando, a farming village of a few thousand people southeast of Ouagadougou, the first son of the village chief. Gando had no school, so at seven he was sent away to the city, where he sat with dozens of other children in concrete-block classrooms that trapped the heat until thinking itself became a struggle. He never forgot what the heat felt like.

A carpentry apprenticeship and a scholarship eventually carried him to Berlin, and while still an architecture student there he founded a small association, Schulbausteine für Gando, bricks for Gando, raising money so that the children of his village would not have to leave home as he had. In 2001 the Gando Primary School opened, designed by Kéré and raised by the hands of the villagers themselves from compressed earth blocks, with a raised metal roof floating above a perforated clay ceiling so the building could breathe. It won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004 and set Kéré on the road that led, in 2022, to the Pritzker Prize, the first ever awarded to an African.

The campus grew because enrollment surged as children walked in from surrounding villages. An extension came first. Then, Kéré placed a library between the school and its extension, drawing on everything the village had learned along the way. 

A Ceiling Made of Pots

The library breaks from the straight lines of the school. Its compressed earth block walls curve into an ellipse, a rounder geometry closer to the traditional forms of the region, positioned to shield the schoolyard from the dusty easterly winds. Overhead, Kéré took a different approach. Rather than import a lighting and ventilation system, he asked the village for pots.

The cut vessels were cast into the concrete ceiling, creating dozens of circular openings, each serving as both a skylight and an air vent. Above this perforated slab floats a wide corrugated metal roof on a light steel frame, extending well beyond the walls to provide shade and shelter outdoor reading areas, with clear polycarbonate covering the openings against rain. The physics does the rest. The sun bakes the metal sheet, the heated air beneath it rises and rushes out, and that movement steadily pulls the warm air of the library up through the pot holes, drawing cooler air in through the windows below. The hotter the day, the harder the roof works. The building runs its own ventilation on sunlight and geometry, without a single watt of electricity.

The Weed That Became a Wall

Around the ellipse stands a screen of slender timber columns made from eucalyptus, a tree so disliked in Burkina Faso that it is usually cut for firewood, blamed for drinking the soil dry while giving almost no shade. Kéré looked at the despised tree and saw straight, fast-growing, termite-resistant poles. The library marked his first use of eucalyptus, arranged as a permeable screen that filters sun and wind and forms shaded alcoves where students tuck themselves away with books. Harvesting the thirsty invader for construction, and replanting native species in its place, turns a driver of desertification into a useful building material. 

The Village Became the Architect

What makes Gando matter far beyond its size is who holds the knowledge now. Every wall of the campus was built by the people of Gando, who were trained on site, and the skills did not stop there. Villagers who learned on the school carried the techniques onward to other buildings and other villages. It echoed an older African pattern in which construction was both a communal act and a transfer of knowledge at once. The same pattern once raised earthworks so vast they rank among humanity's largest constructions. The skills remained in Gando long after the library was finished.

There is a national lineage here too. A generation earlier, Thomas Sankara had rallied Burkinabè to build their own schools, clinics, and reservoirs with their own hands, preaching that self-reliance was the only development that lasts. Kéré, who met Sankara as a young man, has spent his career putting those ideas into practice. The hands that learned on a village library now stand behind a portfolio that reaches across the continent, using the same local materials and local labour. 

The Blueprint Under the Constellation

Africa will need thousands of schools, libraries, and clinics in the coming decades, yet governments still too often commission buildings of concrete and glass, sealed boxes that arrive with air conditioning bills attached. Gando offers the counter-model. The most advanced building technology available to the continent may be its own people, trained and trusted, working in the material beneath their feet. That is what agency looks like when it moves from slogan to structure.

The village found cooling in its pottery, building material in eucalyptus, and lasting value in the skills its people carried with them. None of it required a miracle, only the decision to look at what a village already had and take it seriously.

At midday in Gando, the constellation of light drifts across the library floor, and children read beneath a ceiling their mothers shaped with their own hands. Somewhere in that room sits a seven-year-old who will never have to leave home to learn. That was the whole point.
